Stay safe online - free tools and plain-language guides

More people in Nepal now bank, shop, study and find work on their phones - and online fraud has grown with it. The Nepal Police Cyber Bureau receives thousands of complaints every year, most of them about money lost to fake messages, fake jobs and hacked social media accounts. This free centre helps you check before you click, and tells you what to do if something has already gone wrong.

10 golden rules for staying safe online

  1. Never share an OTP or PIN - with anyone. No bank, wallet, telecom company or police officer will ever ask for it.
  2. Don't tap links in unexpected SMS or Messenger messages about prizes, KYC, blocked accounts or parcels. Open the official app yourself instead.
  3. Turn on two-step verification for Facebook, WhatsApp, Gmail and your wallet app. It stops most account takeovers.
  4. Use a different, long password for each important account - three or four random words work well. Test yours.
  5. If a friend asks for money online, call them on their usual number first. Hacked Messenger accounts are the most common trick.
  6. You never need to scan a QR code or pay a fee to receive money, a prize, a loan or a job.
  7. Install apps only from the Play Store or App Store, and never install an APK file sent to you on WhatsApp or Viber.
  8. Update your phone and apps when updates arrive - they close the holes attackers use.
  9. Think before you post your citizenship card, passport, phone number or location publicly.
  10. If something goes wrong, act fast - call your bank and report it. Shame helps the scammer, not you.
